Chicago Local 710 Trusteeship to End with Fall Election

Nearly three years after imposing a trusteeship on Local 710, James Hoffa announced that an election will finally be held. The schedule calls for nominations in September 2017 to be followed by a local election in October.

The trusteeship, initiated in July 2014, removed Pat Flynn and other members of the Local 710 executive board because of financial irregularities. Hoffa appointed John Coli as his Trustee to run the local. Coli was voted out as a Central Region vice president last November, and lost in Local 710 by over a 2-1 margin.

Proposed “Butch Lewis Act” Introduced

The Butch Lewis Act to protect earned pensions was introduced at a press conference today, with the entire Democratic caucus in Congress lined up in support. Now the challenge is to continue the grassroots mobilization and lobbying effort to build bipartisan support for pension protection.

Butch Lewis

The pension protection bill is named in honor of Butch Lewis, who died in December 2015, and was an important leader in the pension protection movement. His widow, Rita Lewis, has carried on the fight and was a featured speaker at the Washington DC press conference.
