U.S. set first fuel standards for big trucks

October 25, 2010: The Obama administration on Monday proposed the first ever fuel efficiency and emissions standards for big tractor trailers and other commercial trucks. The joint Transportation Department and Environmental Protection Agency initiative covers a range of vehicles from delivery vans to long-haul rigs, and is expected to cut nearly 250 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over the lifespans of vehicles produced within the program's first five years. WSJ: UPS Raises Outlook as Profit Jumps

October 21, 2010: United Parcel Service Inc. reported an 81% surge in third-quarter profit and raised its 2010 financial forecast amid what the shipping giant called a lethargic economic recovery. NY Times: 2nd Teamsters Candidate to Challenge Hoffa in 2011

Sandy Pope, president of a Teamsters local in New York City and one of the most prominent women in the union, announced on Monday that she would challenge James P. Hoffa for the presidency. Mr. Hoffa, who has the most famous name in organized labor, has headed the International Brotherhood of Teamsters since 1999. The election will be in October 2011. Teamster Funds Shifts Billions to Mellon, Northern Trust

October 7, 2010: Central States, Southeast & Southwest Areas Pension Fund, Rosemont, Ill., hired Mellon Capital Management to run $926 million in an MSCI EAFE index find, according to a filing in U.S. District Court in Chicago. The $18.5 billion fund also added $715 million to an existing S7P 500 index fund managed by Mellon, increasing it to $4.6 billion, according to the filing. Click here to read more.

UPS Buys 130 Hybrid Trucks

October 5, 2010: UPS Inc. said it has purchased 130 hybrid electric vehicles, which the package carrier will launch into service next year. UPS Freight to Raise Rates 5.9 Percent

October 4, 2010: UPS Freight will raise its non-contract rates 5.9 percent Oct. 18, becoming the fourth major less-than-truckload carrier to ask shippers for a general rate increase.
