Two-Tier Healthcare Under TeamCare: Are You are on the Lower Tier?

September 12, 2013: UPS Teamsters who are in the same health plan should get the same coverage. But that won't happen if Hoffa-Hall get their way with the current Central Region UPS proposal.

Under the new TeamCare proposal, full-time UPS Teamsters who are already in TeamCare will get substandard benefits compared to UPS Teamsters who are being moved into TeamCare.

The Company is contributing the same amount of money per week to Central States for all full-timers per hour to pay for their health coverage. But thousands of UPS Teamsters in Cleveland Local 407 Kansas City Local 41, outstate Missouri, Louisville Local 89, Lexington Local 651 and some other areas will get lesser coverage.

  • An annual deductible in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017. The deductible for all other UPS Teamsters in TeamCare will be zero for that period.
  • A cap on annual dental coverage of $1,500. Other UPS Teamsters in TeamCare will have no cap.
  • Short-term disability capped at $300 for the first 10 weeks and $350 for the next 16. Other UPS Teamsters in Teamcare will get 60% of weekly pay up to $500/week starting the first week.
  • Inferior vision coverage. $80 max on single-vision lenses as opposed to 100% coverage.

By Voting No on UPS's first offer, members won important improvements in TeamCare coverage for UPSers already in the plan—including reduced prescription costs and deductibles, and improved retiree coverage for spouses and children.

The members No Vote won those improvements.

Now, members are gearing up to Vote No one more time, to fight for equal coverage for all UPS Teamsters in TeamCare—as well as improvements in the Central States Supplement.

"The new plan is a slap in the face," said Local 89 Teamster Hugh Bloyd. "The IBT is dividing members. I have paid union dues for 29 years, and feel that we should all be united and have the same coverage and benefits. Let's stand together and vote No."
