Concerned About the Future? Do Something About It

January 8, 2009: However they voted, many Freight Teamsters are mad about concessions and concerned about the future. If you're one of them, you face a choice: complain in the break room or do something about it.

Our union's power is on the decline in the freight industry. Our problems predate the Hoffa administration to be sure. But the current leadership, which came into office promising to Restore Teamster Power, has utterly failed to meet the challenge.

What has Hoffa delivered Freight Teamsters? CF. USF Redstar. UPS pullout from Central States. A concessionary freight agreement, followed by more concessions.

Thankfully, our union organized UPS Freight. But then Hoffa fumbled the ball and gave the world's most profitable transportation company a substandard contract that undercut the NMFA, and no Teamster pensions.

With the Change of Operations coming soon and ABF likely to be angling for concessions, things may get worse before they get better. But if we want to start to turn things around in 2009, then we need to do something about it.

Thousands of Freight Teamsters have contacted TDU during the concessions crisis. Some voted Yes and some voted No. Nearly all agreed that we need serious change in our union--a new focus on organizing the nonunion competition and a leadership that has a plan for rebuilding power for working Teamsters.

We're going to be working together in the year to come. Will you be a part of it?

An Ugly Start to Electronic Voting

It was an ugly start for electronic voting on national contracts. For the first time in more than a decade, the Hoffa administration tried to deny members and vote count observers the right to see the ballot count results from each local union. But after a week of delays and inquiries by TDU attorney Barbara Harvey, the IBT relented, and turned over the ABF vote totals to TDU's designated observer John Palmer.
