Detroit Local 299, the largest carhaul Local in the US, has signed a 90-day Supplemental Addendum which allows Allied System to use $12 per hour non-union labor to deliver cars to dealerships in Southeast Michigan.

Allied’s Teamsters are not exactly happy with the idea, especially since Local 299 has apparently signed a deal which violates the contract and not even allowed Teamsters to vote on it. We would also like to know if Carhaul Director Fred Zuckerman has approved it.

The argument in favor is that Allied doesn’t have enough equipment to deliver GM’s cars in the Detroit area, so supplemental drive-away help is needed. But in some areas, drive-away employees make nearly $21 and get union benefits.

T his deal provides for $12 per hour and “only those benefits provided for under current State and Federal laws,” which means none at all. And they will not be union members, though they will pay a $24 per month fee to the union, and Allied will make payments to the pension fund.

If Allied Teamsters are laid off elsewhere, what about their right to do this work, at union scale?

While the rider is temporary, concessions have a way of becoming permanent, once the employer takes a liking to them.

Carhaulers should beware of this new concession, and also beware of Teamster officials who condone it.
