Who’s Lying About the Carhaul Deal?
Q: Why are Fred Zuckerman and the IBT PR department lying about TDU and the Carhaul contract? A: Because the truth hurts.
Unable to defend their concessionary deal, Fred Zuckerman and the IBT have published a three-page leaflet attacking Teamsters for a Democratic Union instead.
Zuckerman’s attack flyer has a juicy tabloid headline about “Lies” and an “Anti-Teamster Group.”
But the truth is in the fine print. And when it comes to his contract concessions, Zuckerman has very little to say even though he takes three pages to say it.
On three key issues, Zuckerman’s answer amounts to this: "Trust what we say, not what we’ve negotiated.”
Article 48
Zuckerman admits that equalization of loads has been eliminated in the Central Southern, but claims that Article 48 has not been “gutted.” He claims the National Committee will protect you if carriers pit locals against one another for work.
Fat chance. The National Committee is the same group who brought you these concessions in the first place.
Read Article 48 and decide for yourself if the changes strengthen or gut your rights and protections.
Articles 2.8 and 22
Zuckerman’s propaganda sheet confirms that Article 2.8 gives locals the right to lower mileage rates below the contract scale. It also admits they changed Article 22 “to provide that any new business would be paid the running mile rate.”
Zuckerman never reveals any big “lie”—just another empty promise that the National Committee will protect carhaulers from carriers who want to drive down the mileage rate.
The fox will not protect the henhouse.
Allied Wages
Zuckerman’s propaganda sheet ends with another “Trust Me.” He says Allied will snap back with an 18 percent raise on May 31, 2010.
That’s not what the signed contract between Zuckerman and Allied states. That agreement says only that the parties will meet to negotiate a transition back to the contract.
Which is more credible, the signed deal with Allied, or Zuckerman’s PR promise?

The Truth About TDU
Teamsters for a Democratic Union is a national movement of Teamster members founded in 1976 who work together to protect and improve our contracts and benefits.
We fought for and won the right to vote on International Officers and majority rule on contracts. We went to court and won the right to have observers at the contract vote.
The TDU Carhaul Committee works to inform and unite Teamster carhaulers to defend union standards in our industry.
