YRC Teamsters Vote Update

August 6, 2009: The vote count is proceeding among the approximately 27,200 YRC Teamsters who mailed in a ballot on proposed deep contract concessions. Today was spent sorting the ballots by local union and opening ballot envelopes.

Many ballots have been placed into “yes” and “no” piles by local union, but some have not been opened yet, and no actual counting has taken place.

International Union officials stated they would not do counting today. The Hoffa administration also tried to muzzle independent observers Local 107 members Ed Brogan and Ed Taylor with a “confidentiality agreement,” which they declined to sign.

The process will proceed on Friday. We will post information as it becomes available.

Some 43,000 ballots were mailed out.

I am very concerned about the votes being counted by anyone with a vested interest in the outcome, especially the IBT leadership.  They have proven time and time again that they cannot be trusted.  I am somewhat comforted that we have some members from local unions attending and keeping an eye on things although I still have reservations about how close they will be allowed to the actual process.  Is there any way to have an independent agency confirm that actual vote tally vs. what the IBT leadership reports?  I think the IBT should construct a tallying system of absolute  transparency.  As they already appear to be falling short of this above-board practice, the membership should be given a non-biased entity to confirm the result.
