YRC Teamsters Denied Overtime Pay

August 11, 2010: Since March, laid off Teamsters on-call for YRC terminals in Cleveland and Copley, Ohio have had weeks where they are working six and sometimes seven days.

YRC is telling them they must be available for work at either terminal at any time. But management is refusing to pay them time and a half for a sixth punch and double time on a seventh punch.

“YRC shows no respect by stonewalling us on overtime pay. They asked us to sacrifice our wages and pension but can’t be decent enough to pay us what we’re due or call us back to work. Is that playing fair?” asked Mike Ostrander, a 27-year Teamster.

The laid-off Teamsters are on a combined seniority call list as a result of a change of operations which consolidated terminals in northeast Ohio at the end of 2009. A grievance filed in April will be presented by Local 24 at the JAC in September. Numerous other grievances are pending.

If YRC has to work laid-off Teamsters six and seven days, they should recall some of them to a regular shift.

Isn’t this injustice something the IBT Freight Division can take care of with a phone call?

Many of those Teamsters who wont get the 6th and 7th day pay have many years in our Union. Infact they help build it. These are the guys who worked for other companies that went out, and while they have low company seniority they have high Union time in. How about a little respect for them. How about respect for all of us. YRC outsources more and more work every week. It seems our BA's have become complacent on many issues. They need to get sent back out into the trenches to help them remember.

Seems to me that every day there is something new that the company is doing to change our work rules and even with the company in finanacial woes, this does not give them that right.

As a group we should be looking at what is going on at all levels... We should be educating the new hires as to union rules and accepted working conditions.

We should be getting the BA's involved at the freight barn level and stop the stewards from making concessions at the local level ,therefore involving the BA's from all the locals to work together to stop the companies from changing the work rules in a more uniform fashion.

Tyson Johnson and Hoffa put together an agreement with YRCW that gives us certain rights, what baffles me is the fact that at every level there is someone changing these rules and conditions to suit the company and the worker who complains is told "your lucky you have a job" when YRCW is lucky we still work for them. Take away our pensions, cut our pay , and now you can work harder and longer hours for less money and be happy to do this?

YRCW is a poorly managed group of idiots who's only concern is share holder value at any price,, WHEN WILL EVERYONE REALIZE THAT THEY WILL THROW YOU UNDER THE BUS AT ANYTIME TO GET WHAT THEY WANT.  As a friend once told me "greed and ruthlessness is good on Wall St"...stand up for the contract and do not let Hoffa and the freight division give away any more...make your union accountable for thier actions by standing up and sticking together.   Thank You  Steve Patistea  Proud to be a Teamster / American.
