PTS Using Nonunion Drivers

April 2, 2007: Leaseway drivers got a shock in March when they pulled into the Selkirk, N.Y. yard and found nonunion trip leasors doing Leaseway’s work, picking loads right off the Leaseway dispatch board.

Leaseway recently got the work when a nonunion outfit went out of business. They claim they couldn’t get union drivers to do the work. Now that’s an excuse that could really become popular with employers, if it lets them use nonunion labor to do Teamster work.

A Leaseway driver angrily told us, “Ask [IBT carhaul director] Zuckerman what part of the contract allows this? That part ain’t been written yet.”

It’s only about 15 drivers. But cancers start small and tend to spread.

Local 294 and the IBT Carhaul Division should put a stop to this cancer before it spreads.
