Hoffa joined Teamster pension activists at a press conference today to oppose the same pension cuts he helped push through Congress.

Rank-and-file pressure has forced Hoffa to say the right things about pension reform on Capitol Hill. Now it’s time for him to DO the right thing and stop the rush to pension cuts in the Teamsters own Central States Fund.

The Treasury Department is holding a critical hearing on Sept. 10 on the rules for Pension Funds that are trying to cut retiree benefits. TDU members and other Teamsters, retirees and spouses will be there to make their voices heard.

The Treasury Department’s Temporary Regulations would let the Central States Pension Fund (and others) conduct the vote of Teamsters and retirees on proposed pension cuts by telephone poll!

Central States Pension Fund officials say that they will announce what pension cuts they want to make – and by exactly how much to whom – around August 31. Who’s calling the shots – and how much money do they make?

James Hoffa has given up on protecting Teamster pensions, but not his own millionaire retirement plan. In 2014 the IBT put $65,004 of your dues money into Hoffa’s pension.

The movement to head off pension cuts and protect Teamster pensions continues to grow, even as the Central States Fund plans to announce their intention to slash earned pensions.

The Keep Our Pension Promises Act, introduced in the US Senate and House would keep promises made to over 200,000 Teamster retirees as well as to working Teamsters who retire in the future.

Some 150 retired and active Teamsters stood proud at the Capitol as the Keep our Pension Promises Act was introduced in the US House and Senate. Frank Bryant, a UPS retiree from North Carolina, addressed the crowd, following remarks by Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont).

By cars, vans, and busses retirees and active Teamsters form North Carolina, Ohio, New York, Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, and other states will stand with Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and Senator Bernie Sanders, who are the initial sponsors of the act.

The Keep our Pension Promises Act would provide protection for workers who earned pensions through a lifetime of honest work and now face cuts that may be imposed under the pension-cut law that sneaked through last December as an amendment to the federal budget.

“This is about protecting promises made to thousands of retirees and active workers,” said Mike Walden who will be there from Akron, Ohio. “We’re there to make our voices felt, and to visit the offices of our representatives to urge them to get on board.“

The Keep our Pension Promises Act would provide relief through a “legacy fund” in the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.

Millions of workers in many pension plans may be affected by cuts that could hit soon. The largest group is the Central States Fund, but there are a number of Teamster funds in the New York and New Jersey area that are also under the gun.
