Carol Tomé Takes Aim at Union Jobs

The International Union is taking legal action to block a UPS buyout that management is trying to use to reduce the number of Teamster jobs at UPS, starting with the highest-paid drivers.

The buyout is designed as an incentive to induce senior drivers to retire which would eliminate jobs.

UPS agreed to create new jobs in the 2023 contract. Instead, under Carol Tomé the company is dumping volume to focus on delivering the most profitable packages.

Her job-killing approach is great for Wall Street. UPS made $8.7 billion in profits last year and paid $6.4 billion to shareholders.

But Tomé’s mis-leadership is horrible for UPS’s employees and customers who are the engines of the company’s success.

The new buyout offer of $150,000 is much higher than the $1,800 per year of service previously offered.

The buyout might be tempting to individual members, especially drivers who are already considering retirement.

But a union is about fighting for good jobs and a better future for everyoneand that’s what the IBT is doing.

The International Union has gone to court to ask for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to block the buyout.

UPS signed the contract just like we did. The company is making mega-profits. There is no reason to be dumping volume and trying to destroy jobs except corporate greed.

UPS management never gave us anything. We have our wage, pensions, and benefits because we fought for them.

Our country needs more good union jobs, not fewerand we will fight to protect them.
