TDU is uniting Teamsters and retirees together to save our pensions. We won a major victory when the Treasury Department rejected the Central States pension cut plan. But more than 400,000 Teamsters and retirees still face the threat of cuts. We're fighting back. We worked our whole lives for our pensions—now we are working together to defend them. 

TDU has joined forces with AARP, other unions, the Pension Rights Center and labor allies to support pension reform legislation that will strengthen our pension funds and save our benefits.

U.S. House Passes Pension Protection Bill – Moves on to Senate

Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 397 – the Butch Lewis Pension Act. The vote comes following five years of intensive organizing by hundreds of retired and active Teamsters who worked to protect the pensions they earned. This grassroots effort was spearheaded by the National United Committee to Protect Pensions. The committee eventually garnered the support of the IBT, Central States, and a range of elected representatives. TDU helped initiate this effort in 2014.

House to Vote This Week on Butch Lewis Act – Call Your Congressperson

HR 397 – The Butch Lewis Act is expected to be voted on in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, July 24. Teamsters and allies are asked to call their House representative and ask them to vote YES on the bill. Central States Pension Fund: $13.2 billion

The Central States Pension Fund ended 2018 with assets of $13.2 billion, a loss of $1.8 billion for the year, according to the fourth-quarter Financial and Analytical Report.

Jack Cooper Concessions Deal Goes Through

Carhaul Director Kevin Moore announced Teamsters at Jack Cooper have accepted a “Restructuring Term Sheet” that allows for concessions under the current carhaul contract. The company claimed they needed new terms to stay in business. The vote was 868 Yes to 427 No.

Members Challenge Hoffa Takeover of Chicago Local 786

Members and officers in Chicago Local 786 are challenging Hoffa's takeover of their union. They say Hoffa's authorized trusteeship serves Hoffa power brokers in the Joint Council like Terry Hancock, and the former JC 25 President John Coli who has plead guilty to taking employer payoffs and is headed to jail. This summer, Joint Council offices were raided by FBI agents. An investigation is ongoing.
