Amazon Ordered to Bargain with Teamsters in California

An administrative law judge has ordered Amazon to recognize and bargain with Teamsters at the DCK6 delivery warehouse in San Francisco after finding the company violated federal labor law by refusing to recognize the union.

Workers organized with the Teamsters in October 2024. In the ruling, the judge found that a clear majority of workers had signed valid authorization cards and that Amazon failed to follow the law by either recognizing the union or holding an election.

Bargaining Orders in New York and California

The bargaining order for DCK6 follows on another bargaining order issued for the Staten Island JFK8 Fulfillment center in April. Nearly 5,000 workers at the Fulfillment Center voted to form a union in 2022 and later affiliated with the Teamsters as ALU-IBT Local 1.

What happens next?

Amazon will likely appeal these orders to the National Labor Relations Board. If the bargaining orders are upheld, Amazon will appeal in Federal Court, potentially all the way up to the Supreme Court.

The appeal process for the National Labor Relations Board alone could take nearly a year.

That’s why Amazon Teamsters are continuing to organize and prepare for strikes and other actions to force the company to the table.

The Faster Labor Contracts Act, which would require a company to bargain within ten days of workers joining a union, has passed the House. If it becomes law, the bill could also force Amazon to the table. Under the Faster Labor Contracts Act, the company is required to settle a first contract within 100 days of workers joining a union.
