TDU Celebrates Juneteenth

Today, TDU honors Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and reminds us of the ongoing fight for racial and economic justice.

Now a federal holiday, Juneteenth commemorates the day when Major General Gordon Granger, along with more than 1,800 federal troops, arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure freedom for the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the area.

For the labor movement, Juneteenth represents the struggle against exploitation and discrimination on the job.

The Teamsters Union adopted a resolution at the 2021 IBT Convention to work toward establishing Juneteenth as a paid holiday in Teamster contracts. TDU supports this effort.
