The VA Terminates Collective Bargaining Rights for 377,000 Workers

Last week, the US Department of Veterans Affairs unilaterally terminated collective bargaining agreements that cover over 377,000 employees. This includes nurses, benefits workers, doctors, and support staff who serve veterans.

The move stems from the Trump Administration’s executive order nixing collective bargaining rights for over one million federal workers. 

On Friday, a federal appellate court lifted a lower court ban on the ending of union contracts, prompting the VA’s decision. Unions continue to challenge the order in courts. 

Five major unions are affected by the VA’s decision: The American Federation of Government Employees; the National Association of Government Employees; the National Federation of Federal Employees; the National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United; and the Service Employees International Union.
