The new year will bring new opportunities and new challenges. We’ll build on what we accomplished in the last year.
Amazon Teamsters finished 2024 with a bang with nationally coordinated peak-season strikes.
Since Sean O’Brien and Fred Zuckerman took office, Teamster members have gone on strike 229 times in the last 2.5 years. That’s about seven times as many strikes as in Hoffa’s last 10 years in office combined.
TDU members helped organize strikes and practice pickets to make employers deliver strong contracts at Pepsi, Sysco, US Foods, DHL and other employers in core Teamster industries.
Starbucks workers, longshore workers, hotel workers and others also went on strike to win their fair share.
TDU members built strong local unions
TDU supported grassroots organizing in 45 local unions across 25 states in 2024. We helped members and local unions involve members, build bottom-up contract campaigns, and stand up to employers.
As 2024 came to a close, Teamster members in Idaho’s Local 983 won new leadership in their union. The slate was led by LaWanda Ellsworth, who built a strong steward network at food-processing company Lamb Weston and increased membership there by 200%. The new leadership plans to bring that energy to every shop in the local.
Education, education, education
Over 10,000 workers participated in TDU webinars, education conferences, workshops, and organizing trainings in 2024.
600 Teamsters, including over 50 Amazon workers, attended the largest-ever TDU Convention. We held over 30 union education workshops, heard from speakers on building rank-and-file power, and shared strategies for organizing Amazon.
We built rank-and-file power at UPS
TDU reached 75,000 UPS workers in a year-long campaign to train worker organizers and enforce new contract rights. Our organizing toolkits helped members take on supervisors working, enforce their heat rights, fight excessive overtime, and more. We built stewards networks involving hundreds of members, where activists share strategies and support one another.
The Teamsters and the labor movement will face tough challenges in 2025. We’re committed to continuing to grow new leaders in every industry and every level of our union to take on problems and build union power together.
