Amazon Teamsters wrapped up 2024 with the largest strike at Amazon in U.S. history. The strike drew national attention and strengthened union organizing at Amazon.
Nearly 10,000 Amazon workers joined the Teamsters last year. But the company has refused to recognize their union or come to the bargaining table.
During peak season, Amazon Teamsters responded to the company with a strike in nine cities. Teamsters spread the strike by mounting picket lines at Amazon facilities across the country.
Organizing at Amazon is Spreading
Amazon workers have petitioned, marched on the boss, and even organized walkouts. But this was the first nationally coordinated Amazon strike.
Picket lines blocked trucks, delayed deliveries and showed workers the power in their hands.
Amazon PR hacks tried to claim there was no strike and no Teamsters at Amazon. That dog didn’t hunt. Strike action and Teamster organizing spread.
Inspiring Amazon Workers to Organize
Teamsters extended picket lines to dozens of Amazon fulfillment centers across the country and leafleted drivers and warehouse workers.
The strike action and picket lines inspired more Amazon workers to get involved.
In Monroe, Ohio, a group of Amazon workers saw the picket lines and spontaneously joined the strike.
In Queens, Amazon warehouse workers walked out and joined the strike started by drivers.
Nationwide, thousands of Amazon workers contacted the union to join the organizing drive. These new contacts will be the building blocks to spread the organizing drive this year.
The Company Is Scared
Amazon Teamsters aren’t afraid. But the company is. In New York City, Amazon had police arrest a driver for stopping his delivery van and joining the strike. The driver was briefly detained and greeted with a hero’s welcome back at the picket line, where he signed up for his $200 in daily strike pay.
Later, Amazon flooded the same picket line. The picket resumed stronger than ever.
Escalating for Future Organizing
The strikes by Amazon Teamsters are the foundations for future organizing.
Winning is going to require building a campaign that can scale up over time.
Amazon Teamsters are growing in numbers and organizing power. They need our support to succeed. And we need their support to stop the Amazon sweatshop business model from destroying good union jobs.
