UPS Teamsters Speak Out on the 2028 Contract Fight

UPS Teamsters are looking ahead to the most important contract fight in a generation.

The UPS contract expires on July 31, 2028. The Teamsters contract campaign will kick off next year.

UPS Teamsters are looking ahead to the most important contract fight in a generation.

The company is on the attack. UPS is dumping volume, closing buildings and laying off Teamsters.

The last contract was about reversing givebacks from past contracts like two-tier 22.4 and part-time poverty wages.

Our next contract is about fighting for our future.

It’s been a tough time for UPS Teamsters. 2028 is our chance to go on the offensive.

We can use our bargaining power to build power and secure our future at UPS

A contract campaign is about uniting around what we’re fighting for and how we’re going to win it.

We asked UPS Teamsters about their goals for their next contract and what they’re doing now to get members prepared to participate in a strike-ready contract campaign.

“Carol Tome is trying to undermine good union jobs. Teamsters make this company run and we have the power to shut it down if that’s what it takes to win a contract that improves our jobs and protects them for the future.”

     - Tyler Wilson—Package,
        Local 135, Indiana

tiani_stevenson_300.jpgExcessive Overtime

“Drivers want to get home to their families. We’re tired of UPS holding us hostage.

In my center, UPS pays 9.5 penalty pay but doesn’t adjust our routes.

We need stronger remedies that actually reduce excessive overtime, like the ability to bring back work, 9.5 rights for all drivers, and language that forces UPS to hire more full-time drivers after repeated violations.”

     - Meagan Jarboe—Package
        Local 795, Wichita

tiani_stevenson_300.jpgPension & Benefits

“Protecting and improving our pension and health benefits is a priority issue.”

     - John Gildroy—Feeder
        Local 385, Orlando

tiani_stevenson_300.jpgRoadie & Outsourcing

“UPS wants to have deliveries made by nonunion UPS gig workers like Roadie and RoadieXD.

If it’s moved by UPS, that work needs to be done by a Teamster making good Teamster wages and benefits. This is a strike issue.”

     - Dave Carew—Package
        Local 804, New York

tiani_stevenson_300.jpgUPS Healthcare

“UPS wants to profit from delivering specialized healthcare products and to have this work done by nonunion workers at UPS Healthcare.

In Stockton, UPS Healthcare workers have joined our union. National contract negotiations are our chance to bring UPS Healthcare workers into the Teamsters across the country.

We’re fighting for good jobs and job security and we’re going to win.”

     - Jeremy Brake—Vice President
        Local 439, Stockton, Calif.

tiani_stevenson_300.jpgRight to Strike Over Grievances

“UPS is walking all over the contract and making a mockery of the grievance procedure with games, stonewalling and delays.

Winning the right to strike over deadlocked grievances in every regional panel and at the national panel would force the company to deal with us seriously.”

     - Steve Dumont—Package
        Local 597, Vermont

tiani_stevenson_300.jpgFull Time Jobs

“The company is automating buildings and eliminating many part-time positions. We can win more good full-time jobs by combining part-time positions into full-time Article 22.3 jobs.

Part-time America didn’t work in 1997 and it doesn’t work now.”

     - Omar Moreno—22.3
        Local 572, Gardena, Calif.

tiani_stevenson_300.jpgProtection from Technology

“I work at the UPS SMARTHub in Atlanta. I’ve seen firsthand how technology affects safety and working conditions for all of us.

We need to fight for strong protections against AI, driverless vehicles, and technology that threatens safety and good jobs.”

     - Alex Carson—Day Sort
        Local 728, Atlanta

tiani_stevenson_300.jpgUnfair Discipline

“In the last contract, New England Teamsters closed discharge loopholes to protect members from unjust termination by negotiating language that strictly defines dishonesty as ‘the theft of money or merchandise.’

We should negotiate model language like this into other supplements.”

     - Tanner Fischer—President
        Local 90, Des Moines
