UPS/UPSF Strike Authorization Vote

Ballots are being mailed today on voting to give strike authorization to the IBT at UPS and UPS Freight. We urge all Teamsters to Vote Yes—download and distribute new UPS and UPS Freight bulletins to spread the word.

Voting YES does not mean there will be a strike. The UPS and UPS Freight contracts do not expire until August 1, and a strike cannot be called while the contract is in effect.

UPS made $4.9 billion in profits. Voting Yes for strike authorization tells the company and the union that members demand a fair contract.

How the Vote Will Work

For the first time, the strike authorization vote will be conducted by electronic balloting through BallotPoint Election Services.

A ballot packet will be mailed to every member at UPS and UPS Freight on May 15.

Members will be able to vote by computer, tablet, iPad, and smart phone—or you can call in and vote by telephone. Every member will be assigned an access code that is unique to each individual voter. No one will know how you voted.

If you do not receive a ballot packet by Monday, May 21, call your Local Union and they will contact BallotPoint to have a replacement voting packet sent to you.

The deadline for voting is 8 p.m. on June 3. The vote count will be on June 5 and the results will be known when contract negotiations are held on June 6.

Information Brownout Undermines Strike Vote

The Hoffa administration’s information brownout on contract negotiations undermines the strike vote. The IBT is not including any information about the contract issues or what we’re fighting for with the strike authorization ballot.

Some members have asked why they should vote to authorize a strike when they are being kept in the dark about negotiations. But voting No on a strike authorization would be a big mistake.

A weak Yes vote would send the company the wrong message and reduce our bargaining leverage.

We urge all members to Vote Yes and to talk up the vote with other Teamsters.

May 29, 2013: The IBT has sent out a mailing listing every local officer by name that was at the two-person meeting in Washington, claiming they "unanimously approve" of the contract. The list includes officers who are urging a No Vote and even lists the officers from Louisville Local 89 whose website includes a long explanation about why members should vote no. The "unanimous support" lie is especially outrageous at UPS Freight where many local...

UPS Tries to Buy "Yes Vote" in Louisville

May 29, 2013: UPS is offering Teamsters in Louisville Local 89 a bribe. Vote Yes and get a $1,000 check! The Louisville Air Rider Bargaining Committee is demanding pay for all time worked, more full-time jobs and job protections. UPS ducked these demands by going behind the back of the Local 89 bargaining committee and getting Hall and Hoffa to mail out its "final offer." Local 89 is recommending a No Vote on the contract...

Teamster Power Sidelined

May 24, 2013: The weak contracts at UPS and UPS Freight affect every Teamster. After hauling in almost $4.5 billion in profits last year, UPS management has reaped another windfall: contract givebacks. The weak contract deals affect every Teamster—not just the 250,000 members employed at UPS and UPS Freight. How can Teamsters who work at struggling employers expect to win good contracts and defend our benfits when the International Union is rolling over and making...

Healthcare Giveback Stirs Backlash

May 24, 2013: Ken Hall vowed UPSers would not pay for our healthcare. But under the tentative agreement, 140,000 UPSers would be moved into an inferior plan that will force them to pay a lot more for healthcare. Just a few months ago, Teamsters turned out across the country in huge numbers to attend rallies and chant, "No way, we won't pay!" Now healthcare concessions has gone from uniting Teamsters against UPS to uniting many...

International Union Power Grab

May 24, 2013: New contract language would strip local unions of autonomy to enforce contract. Lost in the hubbub about healthcare and harassment, the new contract includes changes that take autonomy away from local unions and consolidate power in the hands of the International Union Package Division. For example: the contract would strip local unions of the right to pull out of company-dominated safety committees without the International's permission (Article 18). Local unions from New...
